CHAPTER SIXTEEN
To Mage Fiskâs credit, he did not waste time with pleasantries or protests, simply knelt at Fionnâs side and put a hand on her chest. The sensation of magic being used wound up Theaâs arms, surprising her with its warmth. It was not anything like the compelling feel of Niathâs magic, but it was pleasant, carrying none of the chill she associated with most human magic and at odds with the arrogance Fisk normally displayed.
She straightened and took a few steps away from Fionn, giving the mage room to work, and frowned at him. When she had met him before, he had seemed purely human. But now she wondered if she had been too quick to judge, seeing only the arrogance, and whether she had missed something. And if she had missed his true nature, what else she might have missed?
âMage Fisk is a natural healer,â Niath told her, his eyes on the mage working on Fionn. He glanced up and held Theaâs gaze for a moment. âThey are rare, but their healing gift is very strong.â
âFor all the good it does me,â Fisk said, with his hand still on Fionnâs chest. âSheâs got broken bones in her back and her skull is in pieces. I can heal her, but itâs going to take a while. And Iâll need some food.â
âHere.â Niath drew a pair of cloth packets out of his robes that Thea recognised. The packets would most likely contain oatcakes. She was tempted to ask for one herself, but Fionnâs need for healing was far greater. âThat should help to start with, and Iâll ask the kitchen to send you some more.â
âShould we try to move her?â Thea asked.
âNot unless you want to do more damage,â Fisk answered, setting the food from Niath to one side and putting his other hand on Fionnâs head. He glanced up. âDidnât you hear me? This is going to take a while.â
âAlright,â Thea said, and took a careful step back, away from the mage. Her foot bumped into the ledger on the ground and she bent to pick it up. âWeâll leave you be for the time being.â
âThereâs a bell in the study,â Niath said, looking towards the door. âAssuming itâs safe to go in?â
âI donât see how we can possibly do more damage,â Thea said.
Niathâs mouth lifted in an unexpected smile and he went into the study, heading for the fireplace. There was a small, old metal bell hanging above the fireplace and he rang it once. The small sound echoed through the house, carrying with it the faint trace of magic.
Fascinated, Thea went into the room to inspect the bell more closely.
âA lot of the larger houses have them,â Niath explained. âTheyâre connected to the servantsâ quarters downstairs. One of the household staff should be along in a moment.â
âI donât remember seeing them at Brightfield House,â Thea commented. It made a certain sort of sense to have a ready means of calling for servants in a house this big.
âNo,â Niath agreed, turning to the room around them.
